Celebrating Women in Medicine: My Journey with the Stanford Center for Inherited Cardiovascular Disease

Brooke Gazzoli is Executive Assistant to the Chair in Stanford Department of Medicine

Hi, I’m Brooke. Over the past decade at Stanford, I have dedicated my career to the School of Medicine, spending two years in the Dean’s Office and the last eight years in the Department of Medicine. Currently, I support both the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and the Chair’s Office.

My journey began in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, where I became involved with the Stanford Center for Inherited Cardiovascular Disease (SCICD). Founded in 2009, SCICD is the first center in the world to unite specialized heart genetics experts under one roof, providing comprehensive care for patients. Our team includes physicians, genetic counselors, nurses, and patient coordinators, all working collaboratively to support individuals and families affected by inherited heart disease.

As I learned more about this community, their stories and resilience became central to my work and purpose. My role is to ensure that our physicians can focus on what they do best — connecting with patients — while I support our lab teams, both wet and dry, in their vital research on genetic mutations linked to cardiovascular disease.

To further our mission at SCICD, we host an annual fundraising event, the My Heart Counts 5K and Kids Fun Run. I have taken on various roles for this event, including photographer, logistics coordinator, community engagement lead, and kids’ tent lead. Each of these experiences has deepened my connection to this incredible community and reinforced my pride in knowing that the proceeds support patient care, research, patient support groups, and outreach initiatives.

I feel honored to support the SCICD’s mission and, through it, contribute to the broader goals of Stanford Medicine and the Department of Medicine — advancing patient care, research, and education.

Fundraising has always been a passion of mine, rooted in my college years with my Women’s Fraternity, Alpha Xi Delta. After college, I continued this work, serving as a National Territory Director for eight years, where I supported over 20 collegiate chapters in their fundraising efforts. Although my time volunteering with Alpha Xi Delta has come to an end, I now devote my free time to chasing after my energetic two-year-old daughter. She inspires me daily, and I hope to instill in her the same passion for philanthropy that has guided my journey.

In a post-COVID world, rebuilding and sustaining connections is more important than ever. I feel honored to support the SCICD’s mission and, through it, contribute to the broader goals of Stanford Medicine and the Department of Medicine — advancing patient care, research, and education.

Keep an eye out for the next My Heart Counts 5k and Kids Fun Run in Spring 2026. We are gearing up for what will be another successful event!
