Celebrating Women in Medicine Month

Stephanie Harman, MD, is a clinical associate professor of primary care and population health and the associate chair for women in medicine

Welcome to Women in Medicine Month 2021!

Women in Medicine Month is both a celebration of women in medicine and a catalyst for continued work towards equity. The Department of Medicine supports all women—cisgender and transgender alike. As part of Inclusion 2021, we’re featuring speakers and events all month to honor, celebrate and learn from women in medicine. You will also see “takeovers” of our newsletter and our social media accounts by women in our department, and we’ll be highlighting a woman every day of September on our social media feeds.

A few highlights:

September 1 MGR: Dr. Arghavan Salles, our department’s Special Advisor for DEI Programs and a Clayman Institute Senior Research Scholar, will present: From Cuomo to Healthcare: Sexual Harassment in the Modern Era.

September 8 MGR: Dr. Molly Carnes, Professor of Medicine at University of Wisconsin-Madison and Director of Women’s Health Research and Co-director of the Women in Science and Engineering Leadership Institute, will present: Bias is a Habit That Can Be Broken.

September 15 MGR: Dr. Madeline Deutsch, Associate Professor of Community and Family Medicine at UCSF and founding Medical Director of the UCSF Gender Affirming Health Program, will present: Transgender Adult Health and Clinical Medicine – State of the Science.

September 22: Our annual Women in Medicine photo! 12pm-12:30pm in person; 4pm-4:30pm virtually.

September 23: Inclusion Rounds—Intersectionality for Black Women in Academia. The Office of Faculty Development and Diversity is co-sponsoring this panel featuring: Dr. Diana Cejas, Assistant Professor of Neurology at University of North Carolina and the Carolina Institute for Development Disabilities. Dr. Vanessa Grubbs, physician author of Hundreds of Interlaced Fingers and California Health Care Foundation contributing writer. Dr. Stella Safo, New York Academy of Medicine Fellow and Founder of Just Equity for Health. Our Associate Chair for Diversity. Dr. Tamara Dunn will be moderating.

September 29 MGR: Dr. Narjust Duma, a thoracic oncologist and Associate Director of the Cancer Care Equity Program at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, will be presenting (title TBD).

“Women in Medicine Month is both a celebration of women in medicine and a catalyst for continued work towards equity.”

The pandemic has illuminated the work that we still need to do to support women in medicine, for the health of all. Dr. Arghavan Salles and Dr. Reshma Jagshi just published this Lancet commentary on the role that institutions play in the advancement of women in medicine during the pandemic and beyond. There is now a task force sponsored by the OFDD on the impact of COVID on women—and more to come.

I want to give special thanks to our WIM Month working group that has been working behind the scenes with me to put this all together:
